2020 Scholarship Winners
Jaylen Anteneh
Jaylen is a devoted athlete, he demonstrates intentional commitment to other priorities in his life, most notably academics, family, and his community.
He attended Bishop O’Dowd High School graduating with a 3.96 grade point average.
He participated in numerous extracurricular activities including: Varsity Baseball, Campus Ambassador Leader, Entrepreneurial Club, Code Now Internship, and STEM Camp.
He performed community service hours in the areas of: Leader of Local Youth Baseball Academy, Youth Tutor, and Volunteer at Alameda County Food Bank.
He received many honors including: National Honors Society, NCS Scholar Athlete, California Scholarship Federation Life member, Outstanding Achievement in English, and the school’s Honor Roll.
Jaylen plans to work in the field of Business and Finance. He will major in Business while attending Columbia University.
Langston Buddenhagen
Langston is an exceptional young person whose enthusiasm, reflexivity, and passion for learning and has demonstrated leadership and organizational skills.
He attended Oakland Technical High School and achieved a grade point average of 4.10.
He was involved in an array of extracurricular activities including: District Attorney’s Justice Academy, District Attorney’s Office Intern, Oakland Tech Mock Trial Team, and the Jewish Youth For Community Action.
His community service included: Oakland Fund For Children and Youth—serving as Co-Chair and Mentoring in Medicine and Science.
His many honors included: Oakland Tech African American Honor Roll, Oakland Tech Honor Roll, Outstanding Youth His Mentor, 1st Place Prosecuting Pre-Trial Attorney, and Alameda Mock Trial.
Langston plans on becoming a lawyer as a prosecutor to help positively reform our justice system; and then run for office as a politician. He will major in political science while attending Stanford University.
Kailan Chang
Kailen is a hard-working, focused, mature, responsible student who is clear, focused, organized, prepared, and insightful with a lot of leadership potential.
He attended Salesian College Prep and achieved a grade point average of 4.14
His extracurricular activities included: Football, Basketball, Track, African American Association of Knowledge, and Junior State of America.
He volunteered many community service hours including: El Sobrante Christian sports camp, CYO Robotics Fair, St. David’s St. Patrick’s Day Dinner, Salesian Crab Feed, and Brookdale Senior Center.
His honors achieved included: Honors Scholarship, CSF, National Honors Society, First Team All-League Football, and English Honors.
Kailen plans to become a firefighter or a business owner. He will major in Business Management while attending San Diego State University.
Daijah Conerly
Daijah will contribute immensely in the future through her activism, academic achievements, and ability to persevere through life’s toughest challenges.
She is a Berkeley High graduate with a grade point average of 3.57.
She was extremely involved in extracurricular activities including: Associated Student Body—Vice President, Youth & Government Statewide Lead Prosecutor, Cheerleading, Black Student Union, Early Academic Outreach Program, and GreenDot Ambassador.
Her community service included: Link Crew Leadership Program, Richardson Pippins Foundation, Senior Awards Ceremony Speaker, Global Glimpse—Foreign Exchange Program, the Alameda County Food Bank, and Mobilize Her—Student Speaker.
Her honors achieved included: Martin Luther King Jr. Next Generation, Mayors Student Recognition Leadership & Extraordinary Award, Academic Achievement Award—Scholar Athlete, and African American Scholar Award.
Daijah plans to become a lawyer in a law firm, run for local political office and then a congresswoman. She will major in political science while attending the University of California, Riverside.
Myles Easter
Myles is and outstanding individual who excels in both his academic and personal pursuits. He is well respected by his peers and treats them with the same respect.
He graduated from Foothill High School achieving a grade point average of 3.38.
He was involved in extracurricular activities including: Football, Wrestling, Track, Omega Gents, and the Black Student Union.
His community service hours included: Annual Turkey Drive, DeFremery Park Clean-up, Oakland Earth Day, Fremont High International Blvd Clean-Up, and served as an Oakland Zoo Voluntee.
He had honors in many Athletic Awards and Varsity Football awards.
Myles plan to become a computer engineer working on robotics and artificial intelligence. He will major in Computer engineering and cyber security while attending Tuskegee University.
Brandon Frith
Brandon is a confident, adaptable and self-motivated young man who sets high goals for himself. He is very strong student who has challenged himself academically and has shown natural leadership skills.
He attended Bishop O’Dowd High School graduating with a grade point average of 3.94.
He was involved in several extracurricular activities including: Varsity Track-Captain, JV Basketball, Kairos Retreat Team Leader, Yearbook Staff, Newspaper Staff, and the Entrepreneurship Club.
His community service included: Oakland Youth Advisory Commissioner, Physician’s Medical Team, Canticle Farms, Scouts BSA, and the Alameda County Food Bank.
He achieved honors including: Eagle Scout, California Scholarship Federation, Outstanding Math Award, First Honor Roll, NCS-CIF President’s List, and Scholar Athlete.
Brandon’s career plans are to become a venture capitalist in the area of innovative science, to discover things about the brain that will have a positive and lasting impact on the planet. He plans to major in cognitive science and finance at Loyola Marymount University.
Jahve Hawkins
Jahve is exceptionally bright, passionate about science (STEM), highly motivated, focused, engaging, respectful, empathetic, loving, charismatic, a proven leader, and is Black Girl Magic!
She attended Compass Charter School, graduating with a grade point average of 3.96.
Her various extracurricular activities included: Drill, Sabre, and Color Guard Team, Book Club, MESA club, Student government, Theatre Club, Women in STEM club, and served as Assistant Stage Manager.
She performed community service including: Church Food Pantry and Clean-up Crew, Volunteer at domestic violence shelter, Tutor at elementary school, Neighborhood cleanup, and Monthly food drives.
Her honors were: Honor Roll, National Sojourners Award, Top Performer Award, Drill Team, Sabre Team Award, Cadet of the Month, JROTC Flight sergeant, and the Top 5% of Class Award.
Jahve is an aspiring nuclear engineer and wants to create a system that detects the magnitude of an earthquake and to be a part of the solution to certain environmental dangers concerning nuclear energy. She will major in Chemistry while attending Agnes Scott College.
Chelsea Idahosa
Chelsea enjoys engaging in community service, she is a strong leader, an excellent communicator and very much enjoys helping people as a compassionate individual.
She is a graduate of Pittsburg High School with an amazing grade point average of 4.40.
She excelled in many extracurricular activities including: Tennis & Track (Team Captain), Key Club, Club Interact, and the Link Crew.
She volunteered in various community service activities such as: Key Club Fundraising, Club Interact Environmental Sustainable Project, Mount Diablo Volunteer, Cleaning the Environment, and Elementary School Tutor.
Her honors included: Honor Roll, MVP tennis, Wonder Woman Award, Bay Valley Athletic League Honors Sportsmanship, Queen of the Court, and the Black Excellence Award.
Chelsea plan to become a business leader and make a change in society by helping the less fortunate, She will major in Business Administration while attending the University of California, San Diego.
Kyle Lewis
Kyle is an extremely intelligent, talented and well-rounded young man who possesses personality traits that are unique for a young man of his age.
He completed High School at Bellarmine College Prep with a 3.83 grade point average.
His extracurricular activities were: Basketball, AAU Basketball, Black Student Union, Argentina Club-Vice President, and the Shadow Program, Student Leader Guide.
He completed community service in the areas of: Alameda County Food Bank, Aegis Senior Living Center Volunteer, Second Harvest Food Bank, Hope Services Volunteer, Alzheimer’s
Association of Oakland Volunteer, and as a Hurricane Relief Fund Volunteer.
He earned Honors for the following: Principal’s Commendation Award, 9 – 11th grade, Bellarmine Man For and With Others.
Kyle plans to start and build a successful business with a vision and passion. He will major in Business/Entrepreneurship & Marketing at Santa Clara University.
Nicolas Moseley
Nicolas is a strong and dedicated student with a tough-minded, no-nonsense approach to meeting his responsibilities with tenacity, perseverance and personal strength.
He attended Pittsburg High School finishing with a grade point average of 3.41.
He was very involved in extracurricular activities including: Varsity Football, Basketball, Track & Field (Captain), UC Berkeley Early Outreach Academic Program, Black Student Union, African American Achievement Network (Vice President), Link Crew Leader, AVID Club, and Activist Club.
His community service included: Los Medanos College Prep Academy Tutor, Special Olympics coach, Crab Feed Volunteer, and Parents Connected Volunteer
Honors achieved included: Academic Achievement Awards, Honor Roll, Scholar-Athlete, NCS Scholar, BVAL All League Sportsmanship, and the California Interscholastic Award.
Nicolas plans to become a Social Worker and to advocate for African American children who can’t speak for themselves as victims of neglect, domestic violence, mental health, and parental substance abuse. He plans to major in Sociology while attending Alabama State University.
Reemajah Pollard
Reemajah has shown the ability to be resilient, with a natural curiosity, resourcefulness, and a charismatic character. Very few people have the unique strength and personality that he possesses.
He attended Berkeley High School graduating with a grade point average of 3.40.
His extracurricular activities included: GreenDot, Youth Bridge Internship, Berkeley, Albany, Emeryville NAACP Youth Council, Exploring Health Issues, and Counseling 57 Peralta course.
He performed community service: Global Glimpse, Youth Ministries Way Christian Center, Youth Employment Program, Youth Bridge Media Management, and Keith Carson Annual Events Volunteer.
His honors received included: Keith Carson Alameda County Certificate for Community Service, Advancing Leader Award, Ecology Internship Certificate of Completion, Berkeley Mayor’s Award.
Reemajah plans to fulfill his dream of becoming a doctor. He will major in Medical Science while attending the University of Redlands.
Nayeli Roman
Nayeli is a wonderful individual who has worked hard during her high school career and has given back to the community through volunteering at various school and community events.
She attended Pittsburg High School and compiled a grade point average of 3.85.
Her involvement in extracurricular activities included: AVD Prep Class, Advanced Show Choir, Black Student Union, Poetry Slam Club, Thespian Society, Varsity Tennis, Early Academic Outreach Program, and Latinos Unidos.
She volunteered in community service hours: Pittsburg Community Theater Volunteer to build sets, Black History Celebration, Sang at African American Heritage Black National Anthem, and the Pittsburg Theater Xmas Show as a volunteer. Her honors included: Academic Achievement Award, CIF Scholar Athlete, Certificate for A Leader in Community and Service Projects, Summer Math Institute, Student Hall of Fame, Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors, and the California Music Educators Association Bay Section Honors.
Nayeli plans to become a professional singer/songwriter/actress and return to my high school and create funding to improve the entire drama and music departments. She will major in Performing Arts at San Jose State University.
Isaiah Tomtania
Isaiah has shown a marked passion and enthusiasm as a student. He has shown several outstanding character traits including hard work, diligence, and compassion in caring for his peers.
He earned a 3.06 grade point average while attending Livermore High School.
His extracurricular activities included: Varsity Basketball, Football, Track, Video Production, and Photography.
He gave community service in the following areas: Special Olympics, Science Odyssey Fair, Tree Planting Volunteer, and Thanksgiving food drive volunteer.
His honors include: Honor Roll, Defensive Player of the Year, Distinguished Scholastic Award, and Athletic Award.
Isaiah’s career plans are to work in Sports Medicine and become a role model for African American athletes promoting healthy principles and rehabilitation methods. His chosen major will be in Kinesiology while attending the University of Arizona.
Solia Valentine
Solia has shown motivation and dedication for her academic pursuits. She is definitely in the top 5% of her peers, she is organized and collaborates effectively with others.
She was an outstanding student at Berkeley High School graduating with a grade point average of 3.98.
Her extracurricular activities included: Varsity Tennis (Captain), Leadership Council, Public Relations Committee, Green Dot Bystander Program, and UC Berkeley DNA sequencing intern.
She performed community service hours in the areas of: Lawrence Hall of Science Volunteer, Community Reading Buddy, Holiday Meals Volunteer, and Math Tutor.
Her honors included: Tennis League MVP, NCS Presidents List (3 yrs), and the Black Honor Society (3yrs).
Solia’s career plans are to pursue a career in medicine and work with low income communities who may not have equitable access to health and medical services. She will major in Biology at Northwestern University.
Veronika Victor
Veronika has been a leader, an athlete, and an honors student over her high school years. She has diligent work habits and sharp intellectual skills and leadership.
She completed high school at Salesian College Preparatory with an outstanding grade point average of 4.26.
Her extracurricular activities included: African American Association-Co President, Co-captain Varsity Cheer, Varsity Track & Field, Soccer, All-Star Cheer, and Amp’d Athletics.
She performed community service hours: Today’s Youth Matters Tutor, Habitat for Humanity Club, High5graphics Volunteer, Peoples Park Homeless Food Distribution, and the Brookdale Senior Center.
She earned the following honors: Bosco Scholarship Merit (3yrs, CA Scholarship Federation, National Honor Society (3yrs.), and Various Cheer Awards.
Veronika plans to attend medical school and become a Psychiatrist. She will major in Psychology at Howard University.
